GRAPE VARIETAL
Primarily Grenache and Syrah, with small amounts of Merlot, Caladoc, and Alicante, depending on the vintage. These southern Rhône varietals offer ripe fruit, spice, and supple texture.

APPELLATION
Vin de France, produced in the southern Rhône Valley near Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Though not tied to a specific AOC, the wine reflects regional character and winemaking tradition.

TERROIR
Sourced from organically farmed plots on sandy and clay-limestone soils. The Mediterranean climate—marked by hot days, cool nights, and the mistral wind—supports ripe fruit and balanced acidity. Vines are tended with organic practices and minimal intervention.

VINIFICATION
Fermented with native yeasts in concrete and stainless steel tanks. No oak aging—bottled young to preserve freshness and fruit purity. Minimal sulfites added at bottling. Unfined and lightly filtered.

TASTING NOTES
Juicy and expressive, with aromas of raspberry, black cherry, and garrigue. The palate is medium-bodied and smooth, showing red fruit, peppery spice, and a soft, dry finish.

FOOD PAIRING
Pairs easily with grilled meats, ratatouille, pizza, and casual fare. Serve slightly chilled for picnics, weeknight dinners, or anywhere a good red fits in the back of the truck

Start with a top-tier producer, then drill down to their entry level for a screaming-good buy. As most of you know, this is one of my operational mantras, and I love how it works. My friend Kate Stamps shares this mantra, and in this case, it’s all about a bona fide Châteauneuf-du-Pape vigneron—Vignoble Simian—and their humbly delicious “Mon P’tit Camion” Rouge. (Some of my notes below have been combined with notes courtesy of Asheville-based importer—and former AWM staffer—Kate Stamps.)

Vignoble Simian — Who they are

Fifth-generation growers based in Piolenc (just north of Châteauneuf-du-Pape), the Serguier family farms 33 hectares across three appellations: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Massif d’Uchaux, and Côtes-du-Rhône. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic (Demeter), a direction the family began pursuing in the 1990s and formalized with certification in 2011. Today, the reins are in the hands of siblings Florian (vineyard/cellar, 5th gen) and Marion (comms/admin), with their father Jean-Pierre still very much present around the vines and cellar.

Vineyards & style

Simian’s parcels span a mosaic of sites. Their Châteauneuf-du-Pape vines sit on the northern side of the appellation over sands and safres (very few galets roulés), a setup that naturally yields lifted fruit, fine tannins, and an airy frame. In Massif d’Uchaux and around Piolenc/Orange you see more clay-limestone and light alluvials. The overall house style: fresh, fruit-forward Rhône wines made gently and raised without heavy oak.

“Mon P’tit Camion” Rouge

A perfect example of “best-buy from a great grower.” The Camion reds are intentionally easygoing and bottled under IGP Méditerranée rather than CdR, which lets Simian blend freely and keep the price friendly. (The name nods to a vintage French utility truck—fitting for a dependable Tuesday Night red.)

Grapes
Grenache, Merlot, Syrah, Caladoc, Alicante (vine age ~20 years).

Farming
Certified organic & biodynamic (Demeter).

Vineyard facts
~4 hectares at the foot of the south slope of the Massif d’Uchaux; clay-limestone and light alluvial soils.

Winemaking
Harvested cool in the morning; destemmed; short, gentle fermentation 4–6 days at 20–25°C in concrete; a few months’ élevage in concrete; typically blends two recent vintages; light filtration; bottled in 8–10k-bottle lots roughly every six months. Translation: pure fruit, zero wood imprint, and bright, snappy drinkability.

How it tastes (house style + importer note)
Ruby with a little purple lift; mixed red/black berry fruit, garrigue, white pepper; juicy mid-palate with soft, settled tannins and a round, friendly finish. Serve slightly cool (55–58°F). (Tasting note courtesy of Kate Stamps.)

Why it belongs on your wine rack
CdP family pedigree + biodynamic farming at a Tuesday-night price.
Concrete throughout keeps it bright and versatile with food.
Flex blend lets them hit the same “tasty and affordable” bullseye vintage after vintage.
